Introducing
the NEW
Dietary
Guidelines for Americans,
released
on January 12, 2005.

Dietary
Guidelines for Americans is published jointly every 5 years by
the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of
Agriculture (USDA). The Guidelines provide authoritative advice
for people two years and older about how good dietary habits can promote
health and reduce risk for major chronic diseases.
As a Registered Dietician
in practice for over a decade, it's refreshing to see that national
nutrition guidelines are becoming more 'hip with the times. We all know
that good nutrition is vital for the growth and development of children.
In addition, healthy eating habits have the potential to reduce the risk
for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, the
top leading causes of death in the United States. Having dietary
guidelines that are practical and easy to follow is essential. This is a
"beefy" document, however, the messages are good ones. Each
chapter is chock full of good information. I don't expect everyone to
read this document cover-to-cover, however, it serves as a consistent
base for nutrition educators to provide sound nutrition advice. Here is
