Neighborhood Nutrition© was founded in March
2001. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Neighborhood Nutrition is owned and operated by
Licensed Registered Dietitian,
Barbara Ruhs, MS, RD. She has been awarded the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year
from the American Dietetic Association (ADA) & Massachusetts Dietetic
Association. She is a public policy scholarship recipient from the
American Dietetic Association.
The mission of Ms. Ruhs and Neighborhood
Nutrition is to educate, inspire, and motivate individuals and
communities to embrace healthy
lifestyles. Her philosophy and approach to nutrition & fitness
was born & developed through her personal experiences. As a
competitive athlete (former collegiate rower/tennis player for Cornell
University), she has a particular interest in sports nutrition and eating
disorders.
Prior to launching her successful
nutrition education company & private-practice, Barbara was the State Coordinator for Nutrition
Education & Training, and State Team Nutrition Director for the Massachusetts Department of
Education - Child Nutrition Programs, serving over 1800 public schools
throughout the Commonwealth. Barbara
has a strong background in nutrition education. Today, Barbara is a
consultant nutritionist to many local colleges in the Boston area.
Currently, she is the campus nutritionist at Harvard Business School and
University Health Services at Harvard University.
Despite
the many challenges faced by families today that discourage optimal
health, it is our goal to improve access to effective nutrition & health education
resources. Barbara is a creative problem-solver and strives to experiment
with both traditional and non-traditional venues to provide nutrition
education.
Individual and group counseling focuses on a behavioral approach
that supports physical, emotional, and spiritual health of our
clients. It is our goal to ensure optimal outcomes for all clients. To read
more about the mind-body connection to health, we encourage you to take a
look at the Mind
Body Medical Institute at Harvard Medical School website. Mens sana in
corpore sano (A sound mind in a sound body).
The slogan of the organization, "Decide to
be healthy" was inspired by Dr. Robert Muller, a world-renowned peace
activist. Among his many great works, you can read his "Decide
to" poems on his website, www.robertmuller.org.
His "Decide
to Be Healthy" poem is featured on our website.
